Football Fact
On Tuesday, 24 January, defiant Wigan Athletic denied Arsenal a place in the final of the Carling Cup and reached their first ever cup final. Wigan were the last among the current FA Premiership clubs to reach a major cup final and now the Championship is the highest league to feature clubs that have never performed the feat. Wigan hope to lift a jinx on recent first time finalists.

Arsenal had hoped to become the fourth club to have reached at least six League Cup finals. On Wednesday, 25 January, Manchester United achieved what the Londoners could not by dismissing Blackburn Rovers for a place in the final.

Match of the Week: Borussia Mönchengladbach - Bayern München
On Friday, 27 January, Bundesliga table leaders Bayern München kick off the second half of the season at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Eight of the previous 10 leaders at the halfway point eventually wound up with the league crown. The only Herbstmeisters to squander their advantage in the last 10 seasons were Schalke 04 (2000/2001) and Bayer Leverkusen (2001/2002) although they were nursing much smaller leads than Bayern’s six point edge.

Football Fact
The 26 million pounds (38.3 million euros) Chelsea have spent on former Olympique Lyon midfielder Mickaël Essien make the Ghanaian the most expensive acquisition in Blues’ club history. The previous club record was set in July last year when the Roman Abramovich led outfit shelled out 24 million pounds to obtain Didier Drogba.

Chelsea have now spent 55 million pounds on just three players this summer as compared to 69.30 million on six players last summer and 118.75 million pounds on 10 players in the summer of 2003.

Based on fees in euros, Essien is the 14th most expensive player ever.

Match of the Week: Chelsea - Arsenal
Arsene Wenger will celebrate his 500th match in charge of Arsenal with a game against Chelsea, one of his favourite opponents in his 335 FA Premiership matches as Arsenal trainer. Since he started at Highbury in October 1996, Arsenal have played 17 Premiership matches against Chelsea, winning 10 and drawing the other seven. Only matches against Middlesbrough, Everton, Leicester City, West Ham United and Derby County have provided more Premiership points for Wenger’s Arsenal than those against Chelsea.

However, the most recent match between Arsenal and Chelsea was won by the Blues, the Community Shield match on Sunday, 7 August. This was the first time in six Charity/Community Shield matches under Wenger that Arsenal had lost. Chelsea have also beaten Wenger’s Arsenal in two League Cup matches and a Champions League match.

However, Chelsea lag behind three clubs in terms of success in all competitions against Wenger’s Arsenal. This list is topped by Manchester United who have won 10 matches against Arsenal since October 1996. Liverpool have won nine whilst Leeds United have five victories.

Football Fact
Last season’s fourth placed team Everton have played top flight football for 102 of the 106 English seasons. They were one of 12 founder members of the league in 1888 and this season’s Premiership also contains four others, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion, as well as a debutant in Wigan Athletic.

All 11 teams in this season’s Premiership to have played at least 70 seasons of top flight football have won the championship and all of this season’s participants except Wigan Athletic have been relegated. Seven of this season’s participants have never won the league title and this is unlikely to change.

Everton will become the first team to play 4000 top flight matches when they play their 14th match of the season whilst Manchester United can become the fifth team to win 1500 top flight matches if they record 24 victories in 2005/2006.

Match of the Week: Manchester United - Liverpool
Manchester United play Liverpool on Sunday, 22 January in a match between the two busiest teams in England and two of the busiest in Europe. Manchester United’s last match, the FA Cup replay against Burton Albion on Wednesday, 18 January, was their 36th of the season. Liverpool have played one more match than United and only French club RC Lens have played more matches this season than the Reds.

United and Liverpool are no strangers to playing huge numbers of games with United playing more than any other team in Europe last season and 2002/2003 whilst Liverpool held the same distinction in 2000/2001. Liverpool only had one team ahead of them regarding matches played in both 2001/2002 and 2004/2005.
